Flagler brought many technical innovations to St. Augustine including:
electricity, bathrooms with running water (actually the whole city was
then just getting running fresh water), fresh water (he brought water
from Moultrie Creek watershed and treated it in his own plant 4 1/2
miles from the Ponce de Leon), a sewage system, and asphalt roads.
The electricity (with a system designed by Thomas Edison) was in part
generated from an artesian well that had a generator constructed
over it. For the rest of the electricity needed they burnt 10 tons of
hard coal every 24 hours. In 1886 this was the first building in the
State of Florida with electricity; just a few short years after the electric
light bulb was invented in 1879.
Flagler’s Kirkside Residence in St Augustine
Flagler’s personal dedication to growth in Florida was again
demonstrated when he began construction in 1892 on his private 5-
acre residence, Kirkside, in St. Augustine.
