                                  Dedication

This book is dedicated to my wife, Alice, who shared this dream with
me and helped to make it a reality. Without her patience, willingness
to encourage, editing skills and professional advice this book would
not have been possible. I have researched Ormond Beach history for
several years and it goes without saying (but, I’ll say it anyway) that
special thanks and admiration goes out to past authors Alice
Strickland, Edith P. Stanton, and local Ormond Historian - Eileen
Butts. Without their early research and writings local history would
certainly have been lost to the ages. There are many recently
published books written by very talented and knowledgeable authors
that adorn our book collection and are used for research and just
plain pleasurable reading. We wish to thank all the authors that
publish great books about our Florida history.

A special thanks is extended to the Halifax Historical Museum staff
and Ormond Beach Historical Society for their support and
contributions while keeping our history alive. In particular I want to
thank local author and historian Dan Smith for arranging a full
morning’s excursion down Strickland Creek, up through Thompson
Creek to the Tomoka River, and back down Strickland Creek to
Sanchez Park, from where we originally launched. We rediscovered
“The Lost Causeway” together and shared a lot of interesting facts
and folklore. My appreciation would not be complete without
thanking Charles DuToit for arranging a hike through the forested
wetlands just off “Old Dixie Highway” to explore the Bunch Plantation
ruins. Charles is the former regional biologist at Tomoka State Park
and chairman of the Volusia County Environmental Board. Charles
recently became a board member of the Ormond Beach Historical
Society and brings a vast amount of knowledge to our organization.

Additionally I want to personally thank Mary Wentzel for her pen and
ink artwork contribution of the original Hotel Ormond (The Ormond,)
featured in this book. Mary is a professional artist, illustrator, art
