The Three Chimneys’ area again became overgrown and wooden
structures deteriorated rapidly. Spain ceded Florida to the United
States in 1821; Florida became a state in 1845. After the Civil War
early settlers to the area rediscovered the “Swamp Settlement” old
brick chimneys and in some cases removed many of the bricks for
personal use. Generally these were ascribed as remains of early
Spanish missions.
In my research about John Anderson through the last few years I
discovered references regarding several land purchases throughout
the Ormond area by John Anderson. One of the references was that
he purchased the “Old Chimneys” in the early 1900’s with
preservation in mind for future restoration.
