Stephen Van Cullen White returned to Ormond in the winters for many
years, and in 1887 helped finance both the first bridge to be built
across the Halifax River, at Ormond, and the construction of The
Ormond hotel in that same year. In that year, Florida Congressman
Charles Dougherty of Daytona Sponsored three bills authorizing the
building of bridges in Volusia County. The original subscription for the
Ormond Hotel Company consisted of 69 shares at $100.00 per share
and with 26 subscribers totaled $6900.00.
