About ten o'clock Saturday morning several teams were ready for the
start. A party of workmen had gone ahead several days before and
cleared the way for these teams. The new road was easily discovered
by means of the blazed trees. It wound through a dense growth of
young oaks, pines, bays and magnolias..."
Today, this road is North Beach Street, Ormond Beach, and the short,
remaining part of it near Tomoka State Park, retains its original
beauty of tall trees forming an archway overhead.
A brochure, "The Tourist Resorts of the Halifax and North Indian River
Country," published in 1908, commented: "The Hotel Ormond ... is of
palatial size and of the number of great luxurious hotels located on
the Florida East Coast and under the control of the Florida East Coast
Hotel Company. It has accommodations for 600 guests ... open from
January to April. Attached to the Ormond is a private theatre and the
hotel orchestra gives daily open concerts. Within the hotel is located
a sea water swimming pool for the use of guests. The Ormond has its
private livery service for carriages and thoroughbred saddle horses."
