As shown in the early brochure, Santa Lucia Plantation became more
of a tourist attraction than a truly working plantation. After the freeze
of 1894/1895, many Ormond groves went out of business. Santa
Lucia just changed its stripes. It had bridle trails, wild animals, and
exotic fruits and offered living accommodations for the outdoor
adventurists seeking hunting and fishing experiences in the area.
John Anderson entered fruit from Ormond and the Santa Lucia
Plantation at the 1886 New Orleans Cotton Exposition and won three
medals.
He won the best five and
ten variety collections in the
United States, and the best
five orange varieties in the
world. In his true style, John
accepted the fact that the
1886 New Orleans Cotton
Exposition was a financial
