                      New Britain Colony is Formed
Representatives from the Corbin Lock Company in New Britain,
Connecticut traveled to Halifax Country in 1873 looking for a
retirement settlement in Florida and soon discovered the industrious
Bostrom family living along the Halifax River. With the help of John
Andrew and Charles Bostrom, the former Henry Yonge Plantation
acreage (810 acres) was purchased by the Corbin Lock Company
representatives and the New Britain colony began forming in 1874.

Samuel Dow from New Hampshire became one of the first New
Britain Colony residents in early 1875 when he sailed up the Halifax
River from Daytona in his fabulous twenty-foot sailboat, the “Old Tom
Cat." Dow was a northerner and had recently arrived in Daytona to
