                         Mount Washington Hotel
The Mount Washington Hotel opened in 1902 but can trace its
heritage back to the 1880s. The Mt. Pleasant House, managed by
Anderson and Price, was directly across the road from where the Mt.
Washington was to be built.

While John Anderson was managing the Mount Pleasant House he
discovered a beautiful location with a spectacular view of Mount
Washington, about a mile from the Mount Pleasant House that would
be an ideal site for a new and larger hotel. When he informed Joseph
Stickney about this, the millionaire began making plans to build the
Mount Washington Hotel on the site. He and John Anderson designed
the hotel, and it was said to be the most "Palatial resort in the White
Mountains." When the hotel officially opened on August 1, 1902,
Anderson and Price were the managers during the summer seasons,
and remained managers at the Hotel Ormond in the winters.
Ground-breaking for the new hotel was in 1900 and construction
began in 1901. Two hundred fifty Italian craftsmen were brought in
for the actual construction work. The craftsmen lived in dormitories
on the property, built for that purpose.
When the Mount Washington was in course of construction, in
showing the surrounding grounds to a civil engineer, the latter
