the 19th and early 20th centuries. In Great Britain, the result was two
decades of stagnation known as the "Long Depression", which
weakened Britain's economic leadership in the world. In U.S.
literature this global event is usually known as "Panic of 1873", while
in Europe it is known as Long Depression or Great Depression.

John Anderson was retained
in the service of the Agency of
the London House (Jay Cooke,
McCullough & Co.) and then
followed the Jay Cooke men
who went into the First
National Bank of New York,
where he remained in the
bond department until 1876,
when he began a new journey
in the Halifax Country, New
Britain colony in Florida.

It should be noted that John
Anderson spent the upcoming
summers of 1880 - 1886 and
1888 - 1889 at Crawford’s
Notch in railroad work, a
further extension of his
familiarity with every inch of ground in the vicinity. As we will discover,
John Anderson returned most every summer from the New Britain
colony during Florida’s hot and humid summer months to participate
in White Mountain activities.

Researching family ancestry is a fascinating adventure and runs the
risk of exposing much-too-much information, if not presented with
care, accuracy, and brevity. The Anderson family tree is filled with
generations of people who were determined, accomplished, and
dedicated to serving this great country of ours. My research indicates
that the original John1 Anderson of Scottish-Irish decent came to
