                           Life on the Peninsula
Life on the peninsula was just what these young men were used to,
hard work, adventure and the rewards of everyone pulling together to
establish a meaningful way of life along the Halifax River.
Samuel Dow's sailboat, the Old Tom Cat, was still used by the settlers
of New Britain, and they would send out a call across the river to sum-
mon Dow to bring it to them. Dow was an excellent hunter and it was
said he shot a six hundred pound black bear not far from the present-
day country club golf course. The bear’s huge skin adorned the front
of Trapper's Lodge for months. The young pioneers in both camps
hunted, fished, went "turtle-egging", and raised Berkshire hogs. They
would fish in the river, bring the catch home, cook it, eat it, and feed
the hogs.
