John Anderson recorded that they found 411 turtle eggs through the
month of May, and 536 eggs from June 1st to July 29th. In a letter to
his mother he remarked:
"Our dinners here would look strange up north, for instance Thursday
I took dinner at the boys (Kentucky Hammock Home). The 1st course,
boiled turtle eggs, fried cakes and syrup, tea and coffee — next apple
pie — watermelon. Best cakes (fritters) you ever saw, light and
spongy, white and no grease. The next day Craig, one of the Kentucky
boys shot a deer from the cabin, and of course gave us some venison
— the same day Mrs. Wilson gave us a watermelon and half a
squash."
One Saturday Sam Dow and E.F. Ellsworth shot a fine young bear, and
the following day all "The Boys,” as the young men of the colony were
