actually traveling to Florida by ship, train, and lastly sailboat. Charles
finally arrived and the two brothers nearly froze to death their first
winter of 1867/1868 as they homesteaded land along the Halifax
River. This original homestead was near what is now Daytona and
then called “Hog Pen.” Even though the Bostrom brothers renamed
their early homestead Silver Beach their homesteaded parcel never
materialized as originally planned and they were destined to find a
more suitable location about 6-miles north along the Halifax River.
After this unsuccessful homesteading start, at Silver Beach, John
Andrew Bostrom and his brother Charles packed up their meager
belongings, sailed up Halifax River, and began homesteading 160
acres along the east bank of the river in 1868. This early
homesteaded parcel was equally divided among the two Bostrom
brothers; Charles acquiring the northern 80-acres and John Andrew
acquiring and maintaining the southern-most 80-acres. Both parcels
of land were purchased for $2.00 an acre.
