The second Bostrom house was a two story frame house. The main
part (kitchen) was built in 1869. Shingles were homemade and
bricks for the chimney were taken from old plantation ruins. Boards
from dry goods boxes were nailed on the inside studding and then
pasted over with newspapers. Access to building materials was
limited during these early times.
Taking in borders was necessary for the Bostrom brothers John
Andrew and Charles, and the Bostrom House became well known all
along the Halifax River and as far as St. Augustine and Jacksonville.
The brothers soon built a wharf and leveled a road to the beach that
was, at the time, the only wagon road across the peninsula. They
planted orange groves producing many early varieties of citrus for
their planned packing house.
