Our Place in History

                        Introduction

This book is a compilation of Ormond Beach, Florida,
history presented in pictorial and timeline format. My
intent is to provide the reader with an overview of our
16th through 21st century history, identifying early natives
and settlers that lived and prospered in an extremely
difficult environment, and tracing our progress as a
community through the years.

Even today as our ancestors did, we struggle with
some of the same hardships: hurricanes, floods, and
droughts ravage our place in the sun, Ormond Beach. My
hope is that “Our Place in History” provides insight into a
beautiful place made possible by the sacrifices of many
and the undeterred courage of our forefathers. We now
have the torch…

                          Dedication

This publication is dedicated to J. Donald Bostrom,
grandson of Ormond Beach pioneer John Andrew Bostrom
and his wife (Don’s grandmother) Mary Fitch Baker. J.
Donald (Don) was born on September 9, 1916 under
extreme conditions because his mother, Lucille Edith
Carnell Bostrom, was suffering with acute appendicitis and
the family doctor suggested that an operation was
imminent and he couldn’t be sure that the baby would
survive.

As Don states in his book “Climb a Tree and Holler”,
“Even before I was born the Lord was looking out for me”.
