graced the Hotel Ormond for over 100 years and is now on display in
Fortunato Park has become the park's centerpiece. As described in
previous chapters, John Anderson and Joseph Price built the grand
hotel in 1887 and the opening day was January 1, 1888. The Hotel
Ormond was a wooden structure originally with only 75 rooms. After
being purchased by Henry Flagler in 1890/1991, it was enlarged to
over 300 rooms and stood proud in Ormond for over 100 years.
Unfortunately, in 1992 the Hotel Ormond was demolished, but the
combined efforts of the Ormond Beach Historical Trust, Inc., and the
City of Ormond Beach were able to save the cupola from the wrecking
ball. Five years later the refurbished cupola found a home in the
newly developed Fortunato Park.
Today, the Ormond Beach Historical Society oversees the cupola and
a mural, early Ormond pictures, and memorabilia are on display
inside. The Cupola contains memorabilia from the Hotel Ormond,
purchased by local citizens before the hotel was demolished in 1992.
Most items on display are donated by people interested in preserving
our treasured Ormond history. The Cupola, owned by the city, is
managed by the Ormond Beach Historical Society offering tours on all
weekends throughout the year, except during July and August.
